"Would you like paper or plastic Ma'am?"
I have been working at a grocery store for a while. When I first started to work at this grocery store, the manager at the time gave me an employee manual to read at my convenience. In the manual, it breaks down each job at a grocery store: Cashier, Meat/Deli Department, Bagger, Stocker, etc. At first, I found it necessary to read my job description, picking up on what I needed to do and SAY to customers.
"Hello, How are you doing?"
"Would you like paper or plastic today ma'am."
"Thank you have a great day."
I, for the the 3 years I have worked at this grocery store. I have said those phrases thousands and thousands of times to thousands and thousands of customers, nice and rude, without thinking, knowing that the store needs the customer experience to end with you thanking them for their time or else you are fired. Why? The grocery store that I work at wants their customers to come back again, knowing that they will get quality service, and as a result make more money in the process. This is the same with any other human being, people want others to think that they are genuine, polite, and considerate humans, allowing their peers to act in their favor and open up new life opportunities that would otherwise not exist. With the use of this polite speech, people are able to achieve this following of people that believe that they are genuine, polite, and considerate.

I really liked how you made this more personal by using an example relating to yourself. Interesting that you have some mandatory phrases you have to say to the customers... which just makes it seem a little less genuine... but it exactly shows your point on how it does provide opportunities for the customers to come back again.
ReplyDeleteThis is such a great anecdote!
ReplyDeleteI really like how you incorporated your own personal story and your own experiences. This helps boost your credibility because you were able to experience it first hand. I really liked your style of writing as well and your take on the prompt.
ReplyDeleteI love how you connected the "polite phrases" with corporate life and your interaction with it. Especially regarding customer service, using polite phrases is almost expected and I would honestly be curious to see if a customer would be shocked or upset if these polite phrases were discluded from an interaction. Great reflection!
ReplyDeleteI like how you included your own experiences, it makes you more credible. Your use of bold and underlining is interesting, it makes these sentences/words stand out more.
