The Observers Have Spoken: How Michigan Government observed Corona From the Outside

We have all seen this picture before. It the Coronavirus. I know I have observed, along with the many people in America, the changes that have been implemented in our society due to the microscopic virus that is pictured above. My school is closed. Sports are cancelled. The cancelation of March Madness is causing madness for sports fans and sports broadcasting alike. But why, through my observations have I found that the virus, while 2% lethal, less of threat than the rest of the world?
I know I have found myself observing the progress of the virus. For me it is a "Where's Waldo" activity of seeing how many people received the virus a day later. Yet, when I woke up Thursday and was told there was no school on Friday, everything became a little too real. I tried to observe what was happening on Thursday. Every hour, the PA would ominously announce the cancelations of some event, or tryouts, even moving around lunch "accommodations". Yet while I was living this crazy apocalyptic school day, Governors and Law makers were observing from what seemed like the outside.
Last night the governor explained that school would be cancelled in Michigan for about 3 weeks. Michigan until a few days ago, was an outsider to this pandemic. But now, Michigan law makers are forced to make decisions based on what they have learned from other states actions. Michigan must have learned through observation that this disease needs to be contained sooner rather than later, and that waiting is not an option.
While I have had this day off, I have been looking into other states that have taken similar measures like Michigan last night. Yet only 6 so far have closed their schools. One state, West Virginia, doesn't have a single case yet closed all their schools. Their governor, Jim Justice, has his own opinion on how to contain the virus asking citizens, " How do you answer the question, 'Why did you wait?'"
Michigan too does not want to answer that question, and has used their outside observations to come to the conclusion that they needed to take action. These actions, while seemingly harsh, may be the best Michigan can come up with for the moment. And if they are a success then they will honored by the many Michiganders that will live through this crisis. But no matter what will happen throughout the 3 weeks that schools are closed and sporting events shut down, everyone will have to understand that the observers have spoken.

  2. this is super important right now!! i think it is so ironic how unprepared we are, as a nation. it's like this wasn't even considered to be a truly relevant issue while other countries were suffering, only when it started to impact us.

  3. Your take on this issue is really interesting! I am on the same page. A few weeks ago we were outsiders who were learning about the issue, and I never thought that we would have to deal with it firsthand. I really liked how you went through other states who are similiar to Michigan. This is a very pertinent post, great job!
