Travelers to Las Vegas Proven to Have DNA Linked to the Common Housefly Researchers say
As researchers have predicted, studies conducted by recent Stanford Medical School students have proven that the genetic makeup of Musca domestica (the Common House Fly) can be found in certain tourists and travelers to Las Vegas Nevada. Scientist Joan Didion from University of California Berkeley was the first academic to notice this phenomena between Las Vegas tourists and House Flies, commenting to officials, “Las Vegas seems to only exist in the eyes of the beholder.”
Scientists first started conducting studies on human behavior while tourists were touring the Las Vegas strip. The students created a survey conducted at every destination that willing tourists would take to rate their experiences. Surveyors had to rate their experience on a scale from “I gotta get the kids” to look at the pretty lights. During the free response section of the surveys one woman even broke down in melodrama commenting to the Stanford Students, “It was just as nice as I hoped and dreamed it would be.”
Researchers from Stanford correlated the impulsive behavior of the Las Vegas tourists and compared their results with the impulsive behavior of their insect counter parts. Las Vegas tourists when shown a light in a controlled environment, were recorded to walk towards it and hug it if possible, similar to the behavior of flies who are known to be drawn to various light fixtures.
The students of Stanford along with their mentor Dr. Didion commented to authorities about the revolutionary data that they have collected. Dr. Didion commented on her original hypothesis by acknowledging that “Las Vegas is the most extreme and allegorical of American settlements, bizarre and beautiful in its venality and in its devotion to immediate gratification.”
Dr. Didion and her group of students have already considered a new project of studying tourist behaviors. A few sources suspect that Disney World is being considered by the team due to massive crowds similar to herds of cattle.

I absolutely love how you decided to write an onion article about human behavior in Las Vegas- especially making Didion into a "scientist"! I love the fact that you satirized the simplicity of human behavior by comparing that humans and flies together. This is a great piece!
ReplyDeleteI liked how you used the format of The Onion, while complementing it by using Didion's views about Las Vegas. I also liked at the end, you used another element of Didion's piece by comparing the crowds to "a herd of cattle". Good job!
ReplyDeleteI really liked how you wrote your post based off of the style and satire of the Onion. It was very well done and I overall enjoyed reading your blog post!
